In the winter term 2024/2025, the JTLC will focus on the topic of ‘Law against the Right’ - specifically the role of law in the fight against right-wing extremism.
Specifically, the focus will be on political neutrality as opposed to the ‘freedom of values’ demanded by right-wing actors in political education. Teachers, political educators and social workers are faced with the challenge of fulfilling their duty of neutrality in a social situation in which racist and right-wing extremist positions have increased significantly in public discourse. In the seminar, we will deal with the tension between factual political education and the necessary (even obligatory?) opposition to anti-human and anti-democratic statements.
We ask ourselves the question of how teachers, political educators and social workers can use fundamental and human rights to retain the power of interpretation over political education in the confrontation with the far-right counterpart. Specifically: what is the legal framework for what teachers are allowed to say? How strong can the counter-speech to misanthropic statements be?
Our project partners will bring these questions from practical educational work to the seminar and receive the results of the law clinic as a project report (brochure, etc.) at the end of the semester.
Students will acquire in-depth knowledge of the legal framework and the legal requirements of social work in the field of public law, in particular constitutional and administrative law.
The coursework and examination are (independent) parts of a joint project report in the form of a brochure.
