In the summer term of 2026, the Just Transitions Law Clinic will be offered under the title “Academic Freedom in Times of Right-Wing Normalization.” The seminar is open to students in the bachelor’s programs in Political Science and Sustainability Studies.
The seminar examines academic freedom in the context of a broader societal shift to the right. At universities, right-wing extremism manifests itself specifically, for example, in the form of antifeminism, antisemitism, or racism on campus, in teaching, and in research. The seminar will address these ‒and other ‒ manifestations and place them within the context of the constitutional right to academic freedom. Since the seminar is offered as part of the Just Transitions Law Clinic Kassel, it will not only examine specific university challenges but also discuss legal approaches and options. This time, the JTLC is being offered as a project seminar, so group work will be an important part of the course. The goal will be to develop a guide for action. Additionally, a study excursion to a relevant academic conference is planned.
